Designing this component was a labor of love that took 1.5 years from start to finish. I discovered the problem myself after talking with partners, and leaned on them to establish the baseline requirements. I worked with researchers to run 6+ studies with customers to understand their expectations for filtering large lists. I spent so many cycles designing and redesigning this filtering control and using the research to incrementally improve the experience. Along the way, I also built out usage and accessibility guidance, utilized my partnership with a content designer to cover all the known UX scenarios.
